Although the future of Netflix the witcher is in a…interesting (although a bit uncertain) at the moment, his past couldn’t feel more secure. Later in the month, the fantasy series receives another prequel in the form of Origin of blood, which aims to tell the story of the very first Witcher and show how the world of The Continent has become filled with monsters and beings from other races that have become part of the life of Geralt of Rivia and his allies.

As Origin of blood resumes, the elves are currently in the midst of a golden age. When an empire prepares for war, it falls from a group of warriors to repel them. For the majority, Origin of blood marketing has focused on the Elvish trio of Scian (Michelle Yeoh), Éile (Sophia Brown), and Fjall (Laurence O’Fuarain), and they’re in the spotlight again here. As well as showing the growing bond between Éile and Fjall, the new trailer offers insight into some of their allies, like Huw Novelli as Brother Death and Francesa Mills as Meldof, and the larger threat posed by the Empire.

But the biggest threat to The Continent will end up being its merging with multiple worlds. Known in Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy series universe as the “Conjunction of the Spheres”, the event is the reason humans and other magical monsters came to populate the world. Origin of blood aims to introduce all of this and lay the groundwork for the eventual demise of Elvish society and its status as second-class citizens.

With how much Netflix is positioned the witcher as one of its main franchises in the future, Origin of blood serves as arguably the most important test for the series’ viability thus far. I hope it’s as good as it looks, because it looks real well, and watching a bunch of people cast magic and kill each other while wearing fake ears seems like a pretty fun way to end the year.

Also starring Mirren Mack, Lenny Henry, Minner Driver and a returning Joey Batey as Dandelion, The Witcher: Origin of Blood will be released on Netflix in four parts on Christmas Day.
