‘Chelsea will kick each other’
Former England international Glen Johnson believes chelsea have to kick themselves for not signing Josko Gvardiol, one of the stars of the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup, this summer.
The Croatia international was heavily linked with a move to the Blues this summer but no deal materialised. The RB Leipzig defender is now on the radar of Europe’s biggest teams, thanks to his brilliant performances at the World Cup.
According to Foot Mercato, Bayern Munich are the latest club to show an interest in Gvardiol, joining Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.
Johnson, who represented the Pensioners between 2003 and 2007, says his former club made a mistake in not signing Gvardiol this summer. The Englishman told GG Recon:
“They could have signed him under the radar last summer, and now he’s performing brilliantly at the World Cup, with everyone’s eyes on him. As Chelsea haven’t completed the deal, his performances will have woke up many other clubs who hadn’t realized how good he was. I really believe Chelsea are going to kick themselves, and they’re going to have a much tougher job signing him now.
Gvardiol, 20, has made 19 appearances for Leipzig this season, scoring once. His contract with the club runs until June 2027.
Lionel Messi cheated on Chelsea target Josko Gvardiol in the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-final
Argentina inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Croatia in the first semi-final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday (December 13th). Julian Alvarez bagged a brace, while Lionel Messi converted on site to guarantee Argentinathe passage to the final.
Messi, 35, faced Qatar’s most impressive World Cup centre-back Gvardiol in the competition. Their battle returned a conclusive winner in the 69th minute.
Picking up the ball just past the halfway line, Messi started to dribble down the right flank. Gvardiol quickly got involved but failed to dispossess the Argentina captain as he came through the final third.
Just outside the box, Messi used his acceleration and clever change of direction to leave Chelsea’s target for dead before clipping the ball for his strike partner Alvarez from the touchline.
The Manchester City man applied for the first time to triple Argentina’s advantage. Albiceleste now await the France-Morocco winner in the final on Sunday December 18, while Gvardiol and Co. will face the loser of that contest a day earlier in the third-place playoff.
