MANILA, Philippines β Jarred Brooks stayed true to his word and defeated Joshua Pacio to win the world strawweight title on Saturday at ONE 164 at Mall of Asia Arena.
Fighting with calculated aggression, Brooks executed the perfect game plan en route to a unanimous decision victory.
“Bigest respect to Joshua Pacio,” said Brooks, who was very vocal about the elimination of Pacio leading to their confrontation.
“I know I have choice words…I love the Filipino people. I really want to show my heart. I’ve been a hooker a lot in my last fights and I’m a good person.

With Pacio’s defeat, the Philippines and Team Lakay are left without a world champion.
Pacio got the strawweight strap back in April 2019 and successfully defended him three times before Brooks knocked him off his perch.
It was a mixed bag for the Philippines as the ONE Championship returned to the Philippines with a handful of fighters emerging victorious at home.
Also on this morning’s ONE Fight Night 5 at MOA Arena, Denice Zamboanga and Jackie Buntan defeated their opponents but Team Lakay remained loyal. Edward Folayang suffered a second-round stoppage at the hands of Brazilian Edson Marques.
Former world champion Geje Eustaquio also derailed his bid to enter the title race with a KO in the first round by China’s Hu Yong at ONE 164 when he was a longtime mixed martial arts heavyweight Brandon Vera called it a career after losing to Amir Aliakbar by technical knockout.
But the Lakay team found a silver lining in Jhanlo Sangiao, son of coach Mark Sangiao, who scored a dominant win over fellow Filipino Anacleto.
Drex Zamboanga, Denice’s older brother and Jeremy Pacatiw also led the Filipino winners.
