Over the decades, animation featuring Batman has taken the Dark Knight down some interesting paths. Beyond seeing it at better and the greenestwe saw him step out of his relative comfort zone in singing or become a ninjas. For his next animated adventure, he’ll travel back in time to the 1920s.

Revealed earlier this week, Batman: The Fate That Came to Gotham will see an alternate version of the character (as voiced by David Giuntoli, returning from the 2020s Batman: Dragon’s Soul) in this period’s Gotham attempt to fend off an ancient evil that he accidentally awakened in the first place. The arrival of this being, known as Lurker on the Threshold, results in a crop of supernatural beings making their presence known to Gotham, such as Ra’s al Ghul (Navid Negahban) and Jason Blood (plus the Quirk). Blood’s demonic ego, Etrigan, both voiced by Matthew Waterson). Other characters set to appear include Dick Grayson (Jason Marsden), Oracle (Gideon Adlon), Grendon/Mr. Freeze (David Dastmalchian) and Kai Li Cain (Tati Gabrielle).

The film itself is based on the 2000 three-issue miniseries of the same name by The Hell Guys Mike Mignola, Richard Pace, Troy Nixey and Dennis Janke. This comic, part of the “Elseworlds” alternate reality line of DC comics, was heavily inspired by the works of author HP Lovecraft and featured Lovecraft’s versions of various DC and Batman characters, so wait you that the film follows the same path. It’s been a minute since we’ve seen an “Elseworlds” comic adapted for the cinema—Superman: Red Son was back in 2020, and the last to play Batman was Gotham by Gaslight in 2018. WB Animation releases DC animated films at a reliable clipso hopefully this one finds (and lands with) its target audience.

Expect Batman: The Fate That Came to Gotham to be published in the spring of 2023.
