MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines’ hosting of the Fiba World Cup has taken a leap forward with the United States men’s national basketball team set to play their group stage matches here.
According to Fiba, the basketball leaders of the Philippines have chosen to bring the Americans here. Co-hosts Japan selected the Slovenians, while Indonesia selected the Canadians.
Three venues will host the visiting nations for the global encounter which begins on August 23, 2023: the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City and the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan Province.
Team USA is currently being coached by Golden State Warriors mentor Steve Kerr and gearing up to feature national basketball association stars, hiking with an already-rich cast of stars ready to descend on the Philippines. .
Slovenia have since announced that Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic will lead their campaign. Canada, meanwhile, could be played by Warriors forward and 2014 top draft pick Andrew Wiggins.
“Each host could select a preferred team based on business reasons, as their choice will have no impact on the integrity of the event or the draw process,” Fiba said in a statement.
A total of 32 nations will compete in the showcase which culminates in the cavernous Philippine Arena.
The Philippines roster will be known on April 29 when Fiba holds its draw process here in Manila.
