World Boxing: Launch of a new federation aimed at keeping boxing at the Olympic Games | boxing news
A new federation, World Boxing, will seek recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in an effort to keep boxing in the Olympics.
Boxing is in grave danger of being dropped as an Olympic sport after the IOC suspended the International Boxing Association (IBA), the sport’s governing body, from administering Olympic boxing.
IBA’s Olympic spot has been put in jeopardy due to governance, financial, refereeing and judging issues stretching back several years.
In September, the IOC said it was “extremely concerned” that an extraordinary IBA congress overwhelmingly backed Russia’s Umar Kremlev to remain as its president.
For the Tokyo Olympics and for the 2024 Games in Paris, IBA has been suspended from organizing the Olympic boxing tournament as well as the qualifying events, temporarily replaced by the IOC’s special boxing working group.
But the IOC had no intention of continuing this beyond the Paris Games and boxing was left out of the initial Los Angeles 2028 schedule.
This means that without significant reform, boxing should be removed from the Olympics.
A group of boxing leaders from several countries, including the UK and the US, have launched a new federation, World Boxing, which will seek IOC recognition and try to preserve boxing as an Olympic sport. .
